Digital forensic investigations no longer encompass lab based work and long turnaround times. In today’s world, there is an expectation that investigators identify digital evidence quickly, early, and make decisions in real time. This is where digital forensics triage comes into play.
Instead of waiting days, weeks or, sometimes even months for a full forensic examination, triaging devices allow investigators to quickly identify and extract the most relevant data, primarily often at the scene.

First responders shoulder the responsibility of determining what is relevant to an investigation, preserving it, and avoiding doing anything that could damage or alter the data in the process of taking possession of devices.
With the right training, basic triage of devices at scene can be undertaken by these frontline staff, early action which can make a real difference.
This means first responders need to be comfortable identifying different types of devices and understanding basic digital evidence handling principles and how this type of evidence can best be preserved. By giving clear guidance to first responders, this helps ensure that digital evidence is protected from the very beginning of an investigation.
Triage in Time-Critical Investigations
From my personal experience in policing and having spoken to many former and serving Digital Forensic practitioners, there are some investigations that simply cannot wait for devices requiring full examination.
Be that a Missing persons case where the individual’s last known movements need to be identified; CSAM and human trafficking investigations requiring the need to safeguard victims or Organised Crime investigations where suspects and evidence of criminal activity need to be identified, they all demand immediate action, irrespective of investigation type.
In such situations, it is simply not feasible nor realistic to wait for a full forensic examination of devices. Instead, triage can be used to help investigators quickly find key information be that messages, locations, contacts, all or any of which could help protect victims, identify suspects and associates or move an investigation forward.
The value of speed in finding relevant evidence in these types of fast-time investigations cannot be overstated. It can also have a huge impact on decision making around operational deployments or safeguarding victims and witnesses through communications and location based activity on the device.
Triage ultimately provides that early visibility needed in “The Golden Hour” of an investigation, allowing investigators to act on intelligence while it is still relevant.
Focus On the Important Stuff!
The sheer number of devices encountered in digital investigations coupled with the volume of data found on devices means that first responders need to shift their focus on what matters most as not every device needs attention straight away. For example, are the details of device activity of an Internet of Things device (e.g. last spin cycle on a washing machine) likely to be pertinent to a CSAM investigation? Probably not, in the vast majority of cases!
The primary goal here is simple: Prioritise the devices most likely to contain useful, recent evidence.
This prioritisation should always be driven by the context of the investigation. For example, in a communications-focused case, the medium used in the offending behaviour will be the focus of the investigation i.e. what device(s) and communications platforms did the offender use to facilitate the alleged offences. In other cases such as fraud and illicit finance investigations, online activity on dedicated apps and websites, may take priority.
Regardless of the scenario, triage proves a rapid, effective and practical means of getting to relevant evidence quickly which leads to successful operational outcomes earlier e.g. charging of suspects, identification and safeguarding of victims and witnesses.
Why Triage is The Fastest and Most Practical Approach
It is accepted that full forensic examinations, thorough as they are, take time. Where triage fits in is getting to the end goal faster. Triage has all too often been seen in a negative light, usually because its purpose and role in digital investigations has not been fully understood.
As I mentioned previously, triage is an enabler and narrows the focus to relevant data, helping investigators to make decisions quickly. In many cases, that speed is more valuable than having everything. After all, there is little use in having a comprehensive, forensic report if the Investigating Officer is having to wait weeks or even months for the report, much of which may no longer be relevant due the inherent lag between seizure of the device(s) and analysis of device data.
This approach also aligns with modern expectations around proportionality. Investigators are increasingly expected to justify what data they examine and why. Triage supports this by encouraging a focused, purpose-driven approach rather than broad, unfocused data review.
Extracting Evidence Quickly
Triage tools are designed to surface key data fast. Messages, call logs, photos, and location data can often be accessed quickly. This helps answer urgent questions such as who was involved, where they were, and what happened. It gives investigators something to work with immediately.
